GMC FOUNDATION AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO TWO AREA STUDENTS
July 11, 2011
The Glendive Medical Center (GMC) Foundation is pleased to announce two area students will receive scholarships for the 2011-2012 school year. Brent Dion will receive the Sobotka award, which is a $5,000 scholarship, and Tricia Olson will receive the $1,000 Rita and Ken McGovern scholarship.Dion is a graduate of Dawson County High School (DCHS) and is studying at the University of Montana, Skaggs School of Pharmacy. He is set to graduate as a pharmacist in 2013. While in college, Dion has volunteered for the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity Habitat for Humanity and participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk. "I want to be able to help people live better, healthier lives. To me there is nothing more rewarding than helping a patient obtain their best outcome," he said.
A graduate of Billings Senior High School, Olson is employed at GMC's Surgery Center. She is studying nursing at Miles Community College, where she will graduate in 2012. Commenting on her field of study, Olson said, "As a member of GMC's surgical team for the past several years, I have experienced first-hand, the challenges and satisfaction of working with a team dedicated to excellence. This experience has inspired me to further my education and ability to serve in the medical profession."
Carol Condon, GMC Foundation Director, discussed the giving of the awards, "To have donors make gifts for outstanding students such as these two recipients is a win-win situation for the Foundation. Our hope is that these students will return to Montana to practice following graduation."
The Sobotka Scholarship was a gift from August and Mary Sobotka who ranched in this area for many years. "Even though they had no children, education was very important to Auggie and Mary," Condon said.
This is the fourth year that the Foundation will award the Rita and Ken McGovern scholarship. This pass-through scholarship was created in 2008 by Rita McGovern as a way to honor her late husband and to help GMC attract young graduates studying medicine and nursing.
