GMC Announces AIM Insurance & Carney Family Donation
January 20, 2010
Glendive Medical Center (GMC) recently announced that AIM Insurance, originally known as Carney Insurance, and the Carney family made a $60,000 donation to the GMC Foundation. "The GMC Foundation is honored to receive this gift. Through the years, the Carney family has contributed more than $100,000 to the Medical Center. This demonstrates a continued commitment to a lifetime of community support and giving," commented Scott A. Duke, CEO.
Dick Carney is a lifelong resident of Glendive and has maintained his commitment to community growth and development. This is evident through his involvement in numerous service organizations and community boards of directors.
Born in Hettinger, ND, Dick moved to Glendive with his family in 1946 and graduated from Dawson County High School in 1950. He attended Dawson Community College, Reliance Insurance School, and graduated from the Hartford Insurance Training Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
Dick joined his father, Richard, in the insurance business at the Montana Loan and Title Company in 1955. Eventually, Dick's business went on to purchase seven other local insurance agencies, making it one of the largest insurance agencies in eastern Montana. In 1970, Dick partnered with Tom Hagan and Curt Meeds to purchase the Jordan Hotel Company. Within a year, the partners embarked on a major remodeling of the hotel, which was the largest financial undertaking of its kind at the time.
In addition to his business ventures, Dick served as an original member of the Glendive Community Hospital Board beginning in 1965. He held officer positions as secretary and treasurer; he was given the Jaycees Outstanding Young Men of America Distinguished Service Award in 1966; and was elected as the president of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Montana in 1979. In 1985, Dick was named to the Carroll College President's Council.
Dick has been active in the Glendive Chamber of Commerce and has been a trustee of the Elks Lodge. He also served on the finance committee of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and helped start "Glendive Forward," an organization that helped spur economic development activity in Glendive and Eastern Montana. The group completed several community projects and helped bring the Eastern Montana Veterans Home (EMVH) to Glendive. "The Carney family and AIM Insurance are wonderful examples of all that is great about Glendive and eastern Montana," Duke stated.
AIM Insurance and the Carney family have a tremendous history of charitable giving. In addition to their recent donation to the GMC Foundation, the Carney family made a major gift in 1997 resulting in the creation of the Carney Center. The Center provides meeting space and conference rooms for the community to use free of charge.
